WACO, Texas – Fourth-seeded Quinnipiac outlasted fifth-seeded Fairmont State to advance to the semifinal round of the NCATA Championships on Thursday evening. After Fairmont State took two of the first three events, the Bobcats slowly added to their lead in the second half to take home a 267.285-261.160 quarterfinal victory.
With the win, Quinnipiac will advance to the semifinals to take on top-seeded Baylor in a rematch of last season's NCATA National Championship meet. The teams will square off in Friday's second semifinal at 7 p.m. (CT).
Fairmont State grabbed an early lead in the meet by winning the compulsory event by a narrow advantage (36.500-36.275). The Falcons recorded a 9.650 in the compulsory toss and a 9.625 in the compulsory pyramid to take the event.
Quinnipiac was victorious in the acro event, 28.475-27.800, to grab its first lead of the day. The Bobcats scored a 9.375 or higher in each of the three acro heats.
Fairmont State took its second event of the day by winning the pyramid event, 28.950-28.675. It was the third-consecutive event that was decided by less then a point. The Falcons recorded an event-high of 9.850 in the open pyramid, and also added scores of 9.525 in the inversion pyramid and 9.575 in the synch pyramid. QU kept the deficit small in the pyramid event by recording scores of 9.750 in the inversion pyramid, and 9.60 in the open pyramid.
With Quinnipiac narrowly leading at the half (93.425-93.250), the Bobcats won the toss (27.675-25.750) and tumbling event (54.375-52.200) to open up a larger lead heading into team event. QU scored a 9.70 in the open toss, and recorded a 9.375 or higher in four of the six tumbling passes to gain the separation.
Fairmont State topped Quinnipiac in two of the six tumbling heats, including the trio and open passes.
QU made the final margin, 267.285-261.160, after also winning the team event (91.810-89.960).

WACO, Texas – Top-seed and host Baylor University put on a show for the home crowd on Thursday evening and advanced to the semifinal round of the NCATA National Tournament by recording a 279.200-263.390 victory over eighth-seeded Gannon at the Ferrell Center.
The Bears wasted little time opening up their lead, topping Gannon in the compulsory event by a score of 38.150-35.950. Baylor scored a 9.90 in the compulsory pyramid, and a 9.875 in the compulsory toss to anchor the event.
Despite the deficit, Gannon recorded two of its top three scores of the meet during the compulsory event, recording a 9.725 in the compulsory toss, and a 9.650 in the compulsory pyramid.
Baylor also held nearly a two-point advantage in the acro event to add to its lead, recording a 9.850 in the five-element acro, and 9.70 in the six-element acro.
The closest event of the night was the pyramid event to wrap up the first half, which Baylor won by a slim margin (29.500-28.650). Baylor scored a 9.750 or higher in each of the pyramid heats, including a 9.90 in the open heat. GU scored a 9.50 or higher in each of the pyramid heats.
Leading 96.875-91.975 at halftime, Baylor continued to pull away in the second half, winning the toss event, 28.725-27.475, and the tumbling event by a lopsided margin, 97.050-92.900. BU had a start value of 10.0 in each of the tumbling heats and really shined in the individual passes – recording a 9.925 in the aerial pass, a 9.825 in the six-element pass, and a 9.750 in the open pass.
Gannon's score of 9.70 in the aerial pass was its second highest of the day.
Baylor closed out the win with a 96.550 in team event, compared to a 91.040 by Gannon.
